Clean Air Carolina stops literal tire fire in Person County
Clean Air Carolina, Southern Environmental Law Center, and the Sierra Club have been working to hold the CPI Roxboro Power Plant in Person County accountable for burning filthy feedstock. This plant is a 55MW generation station that creates electricity by burning coal, tires, waste, and wood-waste, and other waste-to-energy resources.
In August 2019, our coalition submitted comments requesting the NC Division of Air Quality (DAQ) to require the plant to go through proper permitting with the state, utilize Best Available Control Technology to prevent emissions, and control waste.
DAQ has since fined the plant, required the proper permits, and mandated installation of Best Available Control Technology. Additionally, through a Consent Order, CPI Roxboro will shut down by March 31, 2021. This will mean cleaner air for Person County residents already home to several other major sources of pollution.
