With the support of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and local businesses, the goal for the 5K Run & Walk for Clean Air is to bring together a community of runners and walkers to raise awareness about the health impacts of poor air quality, have some fun and share simple solutions to make a real difference.
“I really enjoyed this run! I ran with my mom- her first race ever- and I was so proud to be a part of such a great experience and organization. I really enjoyed the signs that were posted throughout the race that gave information about Charlotte- etc. I think that keeping our environment safe and clean is extremely important! Thanks for a great race and a great cause.”
~ Sallie Davis, Charlotte
Charlotte’s Only “Green” Race
When you sign-up for the 5K Run & Walk for Clean Air, you’re not only supporting our programs that work to clean-up the Charlotte region’s air quality, you’re supporting efforts for a sustainable planet too! The 2012 race was held on Climate Impacts Day – a day when communities around the world raised awareness and took action to reduce fossil fuel consumption, a leading cause of climate change. To reduce our carbon footprint, we encouraged participants to leave their cars at home and find alternative means of travel to the race site.
Each year, Clean Air Carolina makes the Pledge of Sustainability with Athletes for a Fit Planet and commits to eco-practices that make our 5K Run & Walk for Clean Air environmentally responsible. Our 5K was the only race in the Carolinas to be verified by Athletes for a Fit Planet in 2010-2012. Our goal is to be a model for other race events around the region – together we can make a big difference!
We’re always looking for new and creative ways to make our event as environmentally-friendly as possible. A few of the eco-practices we are committed to each year include:
- 100% online registration
- A virtual race bag
- Clothing/shoe recycling program
- No single-use water bottles
- Biodegradable cups and eating utensils
- Onsite composting and recycling bins
- Environmental education
- Serving local grown foods
- VIP parking for carpoolers/bicycles
